    Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's 1957 studio session in Hackensack, New Jersey produced all the material for the legendary album, Blue Train. The album marked the first time that Trane was given the opportunity to select his own sidemen for a date. He made effective use of his newfound freedom, enlisting the support of trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. When asked in a 1960 radio interview which was his favourite of all the albums he recorded up to that point, Coltrane was quick to reply, Blue Train.

    One of John Coltrane's most popular albums and considered his "true" first solo album with musicians he chose himself. Blue Train still remained faithful to the hard bop style: on very Bop compositions, John Coltrane already imprints his sound and his offbeat and innovative playing. It's over several octaves and lines up beautiful rhythmic progressions: blues, swing and funk are omnipresent. Recorded in 1957 "Blue Train" is therefore a musical work to discover or rediscover. John Coltrane is recognized as one of the best jazzmen.

    This release is part of the New Ermitage collection available from January 2024: 18 jazz and soul titles reissued on yellow vinyl with new codes and renewed graphics.

    Recoded at Rudy Van Gelder's famed studio in Hackensack, New Jersey in January 1957, this pivotal album in Coltrane's discography was his only session as leader for Blue Note Records. The album marked the first time he was given full rein to select his own sidemen for a date, and when asked in a 1960 radio interview which was his favourite of all the albums he'd recorded up to that point, his instant reply was, 'Blue Train'.

    Coltrane wrote four of the record's five tracks and his playing exhibits early elements of the signature style for which he later became known.
