Description
The very best of Jimmy McHugh (1894-1969) is presented by Retrospective, a magnificent addition to the invaluable series devoted to the great songwriters of the last century. From his earliest big hit When My Sugar Walks Down The Street in 1924, through to the 1956 Top Ten hit for Nat King Cole, Too Young To Go Steady, there are no fewer than 52 fine songs. Rarely heard nowadays are many of the hot jazz items from the 20s included here (e.g. The Baltimore or Freeze And Melt) and there is strong representation from the breakthrough score for Blackbirds Of 1928 (I Can’t Give You Anything But Love). Dorothy Fields provided the words for many of his greatest songs (I’m In The Mood For Love, Don’t Blame Me, In The Sunny Side Of The Street), but McHugh later collaborated with several other lyricists, especially Harold Adamson (Where Are You?, You’re A Sweetheart, I Couldn’t Sleep A Wink Last Night).
