Description
Sister of the violinist Joseph Fuchs, Lillian Fuchs was among the most distinguished viola players and teachers of her generation. Combining technical and musical interest, the studies she wrote for her instrument were conceived as a means of tackling the particular difficulties that she and fellow instrumentalists encountered, rather than following the common practice of adapting violin studies to the viola. They are performed on this recording by the composer's granddaughter, Jeanne Mallow, who plays Lillian Fuch's own magnificent Gasparo da Sal?? viola. Mallow makes her first appearance with Naxos on this, her debut recording.
