Description
Jan H Borjesson (b. 1969) studied at the School of Music in Goteborg from 1987 to 1992 with, among others, Rune Wahlberg, Hans Davidsson and Jacques van Oortmerssen. He has performed concerts in both Sweden and the rest of Europe and the USA, and has recorded seven CDs on various Swedish organs. As an organ consultant Jan has led over a hundred restorations and new constructions of organs in the country. He also works as a writer. From 2000 to 2016, he worked as the organist of St. Paul's Church in Goteborg and from 2016 to 2024 he was the organist of Kalmar Cathedral. Since 2024, Jan has been the Cathedral organist in Strangnas Cathedral. The work of selecting music for this CD has been both challenging and very inspiring. A great effort has been put into finding new repertoire in the archives, and often these searches have led to disappointments in the form of music that perhaps should have been allowed to rest in peace. However, several of the newly discovered works, in many ways, represent such high quality that it has been fundamentally inspiring work. It has often been said that Swedish organ literature had little to offer before the turn of the 20th century. This statement can largely be refuted when one becomes better acquainted with the music of Elfrida Andree, Georg Wilhelm Heintze, Claes Wilhelm Rendahl, and other composers from that time. "My goal has been to find music that was com posed during the last third of the 19th century and in this way reflect the era, its music, and its greatest sound resource in the organ landscape - the organ in Uppsala Cathedral. The result was a collection of energetic and high-quality organ pieces of various characters that illuminate their era in a multifaceted and rich manner. It has Gothica_Booklet.indd 14 been important to me that the first CD recorded on the restored and renovated Akerman organ has this very character." - Jan H Borjesson
