Description
This album draws inspiration from the vibrant theatre scene in Dublin during the 18th century, exploring connections between Italian and Irish musicians in the Smock Alley neighbourhood.
At its heart is a set of cello duos by the Italian composer Tommaso Giordani (1730-1806). This was a starting point for the bass heavy sound world we have been exploring; expanding the rich sound of two cellos by adding the gritty warmth of double bass, percussion, and earthy Irish flute.
IRLANDIANI:
Carina Drury baroque cello
Poppy Walshaw baroque cello
John-Henry Baker violone, percussion
Nathaniel Mander harpsichord
Eimear McGeown Irish flute
"much revelatory research and a paragon of tasteful and expressive performance." – Early Music Review
"Nathaniel Mander has energy in abundance, also allowing the spontaneous inventiveness of the music to come through, and the intricacies of the so-called "Cat's Fugue" sonata are crystal clear." – The Arts Desk
