Description
This is the third volume in a set of recordings being released by Tactus which gathers together the complete piano works of the late 19th century Italian composer Giovanni Sgambati. It includes the Quattro Pezzi di Seguito op. 18, Fogli Volanti op. 12, the Romanza in A Major, Serenata dalla Prima Sinfonia op. 16, Scherzo dal Quartetto op. 17 for four hands, and the Fantasie Alpestri. The soloist is Francesco Caramiello.
Together with Giuseppe Martucci and Marco Enrico Bossi pianist and composer Giovanni Sgambati played a major role in the change that took place in Italian music between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries when it moved closer to the Germanic tradition. In fact both Liszt and Wagner were keen advocates of Sgambati music. Of the three pieces on this CD the most significant is the opus 18 Quattro Pezzi di Seguito which was published in 1882. On this set Sgambati mixes creative virtuosity with more intimate and meditative tones still connected to the 17th century style.
