Description
This CD presents a selection of new compositions for flute and organ that have been written in recent years at the suggestion or on behalf of the two performers. The premieres took place in Cologne, Essen and Stockholm. Models for pieces in such an instrumentation, which can be perceived as problematic and rich in perspective at the same time, are rare. The composers who were asked to take part have each found a highly individual approach to this task, also based on the variety of flute instruments used: piccolo, large flute, glissando flute, alto flute, bass flute and contrabass flute. The inclusion of the historic Walcker organ built in 1900 in the Evangelical Church in Essen-Werden sets an additional accent. Some of the pieces presented are intended as "room music" in that they provide for the flutist to be positioned at a greater distance from the organ.
It is not immediately clear what the relationship between organ and flute is. Of course, there is a certain affinity, a common denominator. The principle of how both create sounds is very similar: a stream of air breaks at the edge of a pipe and begins to vibrate inside the pipe. But what results from all this, partnership or perhaps more of a dispute, as is often the case between relatives, is something that three female and four male composers find seven different answers to on this album. All of the works can be heard here as first recordings. Other duo compositions are available or in preparation: To be continued.
