  • Description

The complete album + 2 bonus tracks - limited edition 180g vinyl pressing.

Far Cry (Prestige/New Jazz 8270) was Eric Dolphy's third album following Outward Bound and Out There, all three recorded in 1960. These albums announced the beginning of a prolific career, which would sadly end four years later with Dolphy's sudden death in Berlin on June 29, 1964.

Featuring a quintet co-led with trumpeter Booker Little, it is one of the few recordings of their partnership. Acknowledging Dolphy's debt to Charlie Parker on the song titles 'Mrs. Parker of K.C' and 'Ode to Charlie Parker', the LP also contains the first performance of Dolphy's classic 'Miss Ann' , and his first recorded alto sax performance of the Walter Gross standard, 'Tenderly'.

"Far Cry finds multi-reedist Eric Dolphy in a transitional phase, relinquishing Parker's governing universal impact and diving into the next controversial phase that critics began calling 'anti-jazz'." - **** 1/2 Al Campbell, AllMusic
