Description
The influence of John "Drumbo" French has been sizeable and significant. As the drummer and musical director for revered iconoclasts Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band. Drumbo made central contributions to many of their records including 1969s mind-altering, revered masterpiece "Trout Mask Replica" that vastly expanded the parameters of contemporary music. The group earned droves of ultra-impassioned admirers, and Drumbo's hugely energetic, exceptionally disciplined playing told us new things about the drums and their possibilities. What Drumbo did, memorably and gorgeously, was to provide a model for musical invention, siring not so much a school of playing as a possibility of freedom. For this new CD Drumbo set out to inject new life into the style and traditions of The Magic Band, whilst creating an album that can easily stand up on its own. Working with Magic Band alumni Bill Harkelroad (aka Zoot Horn Rollo), Mark Boston (aka Rockette Morton), Greg Davidson (aka Ella Guru) and John Thomas (keyboardist on "Bat Chain Puller"), the record shows where Drumbo has been and where he is going, with 12 new Drumbo compositions.
