The fact that Time Out became such an enormous success took the world by surprise, including the members of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. By 1959, the group with Paul Desmond had been in existence for a decade and it was highly popular among jazz audiences. Most of the songs were composed by Brubeck, as is the case on the album Time Out. However, one of the catchiest melodies on that album, 'Take Five', was a Paul Desmond composition, and it would become the quartet's most celebrated tune. While they experimented, one way or another, on many of their previous albums, none of them had such an ambitious concept as Time Out, which only presented tunes written in unusual time signatures. It was impossible to predict that such an unusual idea would lead to one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time.
"Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection." - ***** Steve Huey, AllMusic
Includes the bonus tracks 'Far More Blue' and 'It's A Raggy Waltz'.
