  • Description

Primarily known as the drummer for indie rock outfit Supergrass, Danny Goffey is an English musician and singer/songwriter. Growing up in Berkshire, he got his start in music at an early age when he formed his first band, the Jubby Spufflewubs, which also featured his brother and a close friend. The band was a tongue-in-cheek effort musically, with Goffey opting to use household objects for percussion as he couldn't acquire a drum kit at the time. The Spufflewubs were short-lived, but Goffey went on to form another band -- the Fallopian Tubes -- after his parents bought him a snare and hi-hat. He relocated to Oxfordshire with his family at age 13 where he formed the Jennifers after meeting co-founder Gaz Coombes. The group went on to earn a reputation on the live scene in and around Oxford but only put out two releases -- the self-released "Flying" single in 1991 and the Just Got Back Today EP via Nude Records in 1992 -- before splitting up. Goffey and Coombes agreed to continue writing music together and went on to form Supergrass in 1993 with Mick Quinn on bass. Coombes and Supergrass put out their debut full-length, I Should Coco, in 1995; it entered the charts at number one. They returned in 1997 with their second record, In It for the Money, and went on to release four more albums before disbanding in 2010. In between Supergrass efforts, Goffey kept busy creating music of his own and debuted three of his compositions under the moniker "Van Goffey" via MySpace in 2006. 2004 saw him featured on the track "Born in England," a charity football single by Twisted X, and the Band Aid 20 version of the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" single. During 2007 and 2008, Goffey and Coombes began performing covers under the name the Hotrats -- named after Frank Zappa's 1969 record -- and put out Turn Ons, a collection of cover songs which they went on to promote with a nationwide tour. 2008 also saw Goffey featured alongside Coombes and other artists such as Paul Weller and Graham Coxon on the single, "Consequences," benefitting the homeless charity, Crisis. In 2010, he joined Babyshambles on tour after the departure of their drummer. He began putting out solo material again in 2015 and released the album Take Off Your Jacket and Get Into It, following up in 2018 with his sophomore effort, Schtick. ~ Rob Wacey
