Description
Cousin of the more famous Ronnie Hawkins, Dale is noneless just as much a living legend in international rock 'n' roll circles, still gigging to great acclaim - in Britain most recently in January 2007 at the Rockers Reunion festival in Reading.
Born and raised in Louisiana, Dale's first release "See You Soon Baboon" was a cheeky response to his friend Bobby Charles' "(See You) Later Alligator". The follow-up, the highly original "Susie-Q", co-written by Dale and guitarist James Burton, was a US national hit in 1957 and has subsequently been recorded by many an act: Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1968 version is perhaps most widely known. From 1956 to 1961 Dale was one of the few white artists signed by the Chess/Checker Corp out of Chicago, for whom he recorded a substantial body of work - the best of which is soon to be reissued [again], this time by Bear Family as 'Dale Hawkins Rocks'.
During the '60s Dale became a recording artist and producer for Jewel/Paula/Ronn Records in Shreveport, Louisiana, bringing to the company hit acts such as The Uniques (lead singer Joe Stampley going on to become a solo country star) and John Fred & The Playboys.
After a long break away from the music scene, in 1999 he resurfaced with 'Wildcat Tamer' album and in the new millenium has confounded the odds (including cancer recovery) by coming back strong with a succession of highly praised concert appearances in the USA and Europe - and now this brand new release.
A combination of swamp rock, ol' style shit-kicking rockabilly and bluesy country songs it is a personal statement of regeneration and great news for fans of unadorned downhome good time rural rockin' music.
