Description
“Knappertsbusch in the year of his seventieth birthday conducted this opera to a greater glory.
The new Gurnemanz was the American bass-baritone Jerome Hines. Tall and handsome , he had a fine presence and a noble voice for the part.
His interpretation was quite different from that of most artists. Gurnemanz is usually the wise , fatherly old man. Hines was ascetic, rather withdrawn, and more the monk than a former knight, but it was interesting performance. Some of the most beautiful singing came from the new Amfortas, Eberhard Waechter. “Penelope Turing
