Description
Posterity has judged Alfred Cortot as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A multi-faceted musician, conductor and chamber music player, Cortot was renowned above all as a pianist. This Naxos re-issue is the third of five volumes devoted to his 78rpm era recordings of Chopin, featuring at least one version of every published Chopin solo work the pianist recorded during the period. In the July 1933 recording of the Op. 10 Etudes, the listener quickly forgets that these are technical exercises, so poetic and musical are Cortot's performances. His interpretation of the Barcarolle, Op. 60 is noteworthy for the beauty of sound, full and luxurious, and for its unbridled passion. Previous volumes in this series have been highly praised, 'International Piano' commenting that \it is the pianist's tonal variety that sets this playing apart... Credit must go to Mark Obert-Thorn's transfers, which manage to convey Cortot's special tone and nuance, plus a sense of acoustic space."
