  • Description

The fourth in Lake's series of American guests playing with the Alex Welsh Band in the 1960s. Bud Freeman's career found him in the company of Jimmy McPartland, Frank Teschmacher, Bunny Berigan, Eddie Condon, Bobby Hackett. In the late 1960s he was part of The World's Greatest Jazz Band with whom he toured and recorded. He was a confirmed Anglophile and lived in London in the 1970s. In the early part of his career he was a serious rival to Coleman Hawkins on the tenor sax. Always an inventive player, he displayed great fluidity which is much in evidence on these recordings. The Alex Welsh Band was the premier Chicago style band in the UK as evidenced by the visiting American musicians who wanted to play with it. Alex himself was prepared to take a backseat, letting his first class sidesmen hog the limelight. John Barnes, a superb reedman even today, plays baritone as a perfect foil to Freeman's tenor. Roy Williams was on his way to becoming the world class musician he is today and this CD shows why. The sublime Fred Hunt is on piano. This is quality British Jazz.
