Description
The long awaited return of one of Xtra Mile Recordings' most treasured artists, singer songwriter Ben Marwood releases third set of analytical confessionals
Overview:
Xtra Mile Recordings are proud to present Ben Marwood's third album 'Get Found'. Since his debut album proper Outside There's A Curse in 2011, Marwood has built up a devoted cult following and become a mascot of the 2000 Trees Festival. Highlights continued to come, including a solo headline UK tour, supporting Frank Turner in the US, and probably all topped by the very surreal spectacle of this humble singer-songwriter accompanying Mr Turner upon rolling green hills at his pre-show performance of the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony.
A stressful time during the recording and touring of Back Down in 2013 was followed by something worse: a time when Ben wasn't sure he'd ever be able to or even want to play music again. Although he was struggling, the year after releasing Back Down was surprisingly productive, Ben writing a new album's worth of songs. But life continued to intervene, making 2014–15 the year when he "had to embrace horizontal living" due to an intense illness.
A third album was anything but inevitable at that point. Yet here we are, in 2017, about to warmly welcome another Ben Marwood record. Though 11 of the 13 songs on the album were written before his year of slow recovery, the music was open to exploration and you can hear it. "The downtime gave a fantastic opportunity to explore the ways I might record and also gave me a prod in the rear to tick some boxes I'd been meaning to for a while."
The album doesn't stray far from its roots but plays with them tenderly. Pedal steel aches on 'Enraptured', while 'DNFTTTS' is pure andante piano melody. 'Nights' chugs and spits before bellowing into the most uplifting-sounding chorus about death you've heard yet – and there are plenty to come. "I'm not dead, I'm not dying, I just can't get up," confesses Ben on 'I'm Wide Awake It's Boring' as one of just two songs that directly reference his mental and physical state of that difficult year.
There are lots of calls to 'stand up' in the climate we're in, to do something, to not just be. Ben Marwood's insistence on standing up, even to the point of falling down, is a reminder to keep going. His songs are our terrace chant as we face the encroaching night and hide our fear. He's a humble and pleasant man who unwittingly inspires love and inspiration. And his albums illustrate a journey that we're all on together but whose perspective is all his; full of highs, lows, triumphs and disappointments, but ultimately determined, compelling and very much what he makes of it.
