Volume 13 of 'The Gigli Edition' and the remaining volumes will be devoted to those commercial recordings issued during the singer's lifetime, which are not already available on other labels. These include opera arias and duets, a few songs, and 'arie antiche' by Italian composers bridging the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In Gigli's day the 'arie antiche' were virtually forgotten apart from their occasional performance by Gigli and other singers in recitals, transposed to suit the voice in question. Gigli pours his heart out in these predominantly sad, minor-key pieces, adjusting them to his own requirements and gently caressing the line in his own inimitable way.
