But one deserving to be remembered is Anne Lenner, who was among the most popular female vocalists of her time. Sweet and fresh-voiced she was a winning interpreter of songs of all moods, never forcefully bludgeoning her audience but gently charming them. This she did on more than 150 recordings with Carroll Gibbons and The Savoy Orpheans, with the pick of them to be enjoyed on this Retrospective. Anne?s pure, silky, typically English voice, sounding with agent le Mayfair accent, was ideal for presenting the choice melodies of the day. The opening six tracks with Gibbons? small group, The Boy Friends, include such evergreens as I?ll Never Be The Same or Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.
