Description
This first release in an edition dedicated to the lieder of Franz Liszt features the Hungarian baritone Adrian Eröd, accompanied by Charles Spencer. The pianist of choice for the whole series, Charles Spencer has the distinction of having been the last accompanist - over 12 years - to the great mezzo-soprano, Christa Ludwig.
Although Liszt is primarily considered a hugely important virtuoso pianist and composer of symphonic epics as well as piano pieces, his lieder offer the essence of his entire oeuvre. A master of melody, many of his lieder are captivating for the beauty of their vocal parts, but it is the expressive quality of his music that brings them to life so delightfully.
Adrian Eröd first success on the operatic stage was in 1996 in the title part of Billy Budd at the Vienna New Opera in the Austrian premiere of Britten's opera. Since then he has performed lead roles in countless operas and sang with the Vienna Philharmonic under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Helmuth Rilling, Riccardo Muti and Zubin Mehta, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle. He has sung the role of Faninal in Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier and has released a recording of Schubert's Die Winterreise on the Gramola label.
Personnel: Adrian Eröd (baritone), Charles Spencer (piano)
