Description
Such was the appeal of tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims unpretentious, no-nonsense approach to jazz that he became one of the most widely admired musicians of his generation. Fellow jazz players of all stylistic predilections named him as a favourite, united in their enthusiasm for Zoot's never-ending ability to swing. Woody Herman summed up this quality by saying "Zoot Sims is one of the best rhythm sections I know", whilst another tenor man, arranger Bill Holman answered the few critics who dared to suggest that Sims had failed to evolve as his career went on thus "People have wondered why Zoot doesn't progress. I figured it out- it's simply that guys like him don't need to progress; they just mature. With his talent, what else do you need?" Holman had been a playing partner of Zoot's in the Stan Kenton Band during the early 1950's as was the alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, who had this to say about the positive effect that Zoot had on his playing; "Nobody can sit next to Zoot Sims for a year and not have it affect the way he plays." Ronnie Scott, another tenorist and one of his most ardent admirers, spoke of the feel-good factor in Zoot's music; "As soon as Zoot Sims starts to play, everyone wakes up and jumps about and smiles.
