Description
Named after a deeply culturally symbolic region of Western Sahara, Tiris is made up of eight Saharawi refugee artists who were brought together by a series of talent competitions held in the camps. Their songs tell of the long forgotten and invisible struggle to regain Western Sahara and highlight their collective aspirations for independence and freedom.
Tiris make ancient yet contemporary music, music that broods and builds, hynotic trance music that reaches back across centuries to recall the ancient African origins of blues, jazz and soul, music full of Arabic flavour while never losing its remarkable Berber character.
This stunning debut album is a rich musical collaboration which draws out and reflects the myriad of influences shaping Saharawi culture.
Produced by Kad Achouri and Mohamed Hafsi and includes Luis Delgado on spanish guitar.
Tracks: Desert Chant / Ma Zein Wadna / Tiris Nibreeha / Istenfar / Ya Jayti / El Nabi / El Leil, El Leil / Assalam / Aid Istiqlal / Ghadara / Ya Dayni / Eh Heh Esski.
Radio includes World Routes (R3), Andy Kershaw show (R3), BBC Radio London, BBC Sheffield and Late Junction(R3).
Reviews confirmed for The Guardian, The Independent and The Telegraph.
Features confirmed in both fRoots and Songlines(Top of the World).
Tiris will be performing as part of the Sandblast Festival, which aims to highlight the rich tapestry of Saharawi culture and history.
