Description
After Cape Verde won independence in 1975, the band Bulimundo and its leader Katchas introduced Cape Verdean people to their electric version of funaná. It caused a revolution!
The two albums "Bulimundo" and "Djâm Brancu Dja" that triggered this cultural shockwave in 1980 and led to the group Bulimundo's success are at last available again, re-released by Lusafrica in a 2CD box with English text and photos.
Funaná traditional song from the heartlands of the island of Santiago (Cape Verde) is accompanied by diatonic accordion and knives scraped over iron bars to mark the beat. The words are about rural life. After the country won independence in 1975, the band Bulimundo and its leader Katchas introduced Cape Verdeans to their electric version of funaná. It caused a revolution!
Today, more than 30 years after the band started out, Bulimundo's music is as fresh as ever and has become a benchmark. The group continue to enjoy an iconic status and prestige based on the story of their struggle and commitment to turning an obscure local musical tradition into a symbol of Cape Verdean culture.
