Description
Live recording of sarod player Amjad Ali Khan, accompanied by Sabir Khan on the tabla, from October 1978. It was recorded at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, India's premier cultural institution. Digitally mastered from the original source tapes.
Amjad Ali Khan is the sixth generation sarod player of the Bangash lineage. Born in 1945 he gave his first solo recital at the age of 12. Since then, he has gone on to be recognised as one of the greatest sarod players in the country and internationally.
Raga Hemawati is a carnatic (south Indian) based raga, but here Amjad performs it in the Hindustani (north Indian) tradition. The raga has all seven notes in ascending and descending scale. Raga Khamaj, is a romantic night raga. Raga Shyamshree is a creation of Amjad Ali Khan. It is an intriguing mixture of three evening ragas, Shree, Shyam Kalyan and Hamsadhwani. Amjad's effortless rendering of the raga makes it an eminently melodious experience.
