Description
Echoes (1984) is the debut solo album by Wally Badarou, a keyboardist and producer closely associated with the Compass Point Studios scene - This re-issue faithfully replicates the original Island Records UK release and is pressed on 180g vinyl.
Recorded between the Bahamas and London, the album sits at the intersection of progressive electronic, synth-pop, and club-oriented music.
Largely instrumental, Echoes showcases Badarou's distinctive approach to synthesizers, blending atmospheric textures with rhythmic grooves influenced by funk, jazz, and Caribbean styles. Tracks such as "Chief Inspector," "Mambo," and "Hi-Life" highlight his ability to fuse danceable beats with melodic sophistication; "Mambo" was later sampled by Massive Attack, underlining the album's lasting influence.
The record reflects Badarou's experience as a session musician and collaborator, translating studio expertise into a cohesive solo statement. Its sound has been described as dreamlike and cinematic, with the artist himself likening the music to a "soundtrack of an imaginary movie.
Echoes has since gained cult status for its forward-thinking production and genre-defying style. Built around early digital synthesizer technology and fluid composition, the album remains a notable example of 1980s electronic music that continues to resonate with modern audiences.
