Description
Performed and recorded at the Madeira Festival in 1981, this album showcases the brilliant playing of the solo flute of the New York Phillharmonic at the time, Julius Baker. He is supported by the versatile performer Anthony Newman on harpsichord, as well as conducting the Festival ensemble. Produced and engineered by the fabled team at Elite Recordings, Joanna Nickrenz and Marc Aubort, this performance reflects the focus on Bach’s music at the festival. JULIUS BAKER, considered during his lifetime to be a flutist’s flutist, was renowned not only as a solo recitalist, but for his work as the solo flute of the New York Philharmonic (and prior to that, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). Born in Cleveland, OH, Baker studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and began his career with the Cleveland Orchestra. His solo career began with a broadcast performance of the Ibert Flute Concerto, with the CBS Symphony Orchestra. Baker also was on the faculty at the Juilliard School of Music, having joined in 1954.
