Description
This album contains not only some of the best known marches by the great John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), but an interesting selection of theatrical and dance numbers – waltzes, tangos & foxtrots – from his lesser known works. Extensively researched by the conductor of the recording, Erich Kunzel, from source materials at the Library of Congress, this recording was made on March 29, 1982 (specifically between 10:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m.!) at Music Hall in Cincinnati, OH, and was produced by the three-time Grammy winner, Judith Sherman. ERICH KUNZEL, CONDUCTOR Called the 'Prince of Pops' by the Chicago Tribune, he performed with a number of leading pops and symphony orchestras, especially the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, which he led for 32 years. CINCINNATI POPS ORCHESTRA The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was founded in 1977 out of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Its members are also the members of the Cincinnati Symphony, and the Pops is managed by the same administration. Erich Kunzel, the Pops’ founding conductor, led the Pops until his death in 2009.
