Description
Discovered by jazz produced John Hammond, Billie Holiday recorded her first two sides for the Columbia label in 1933, backed by an all-star group including Jack Teagarden and Benny Goodman. However, her recording career really started two years later, and from 1935 to 1941 she made for the same label an outstanding series of sessions backed by small groups of first-rate swing musicians, most of them conducted by pianist Teddy Wilson and featuring Lester Young on tenor sax.
Originally released as a triple LP set in 1962, only three years after the singer's untimely death, "The Golden Years" (Columbia C3L-21) puts together 48 of Billie's best performances from that glorious period, selected by well-known record producer and historian Frank Driggs. Four extra songs from the same sessions not included on the original set have been added here as a bonus. Includes a 20-page booklet.
