Description
1995 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II. May, 1945, saw the surrender of Germany and the collapse of Hitler's dream of a 1000 Year Reich, and in August, 1945, the might of the Japanese Empire was finally crushed. To the younger generations, names, places and events from that fateful era are just part of history, but for those who remember what it was like during those six dark years, memories galore will come flooding back. Shall we ever forget Churchill and his inspirational marshalling of the English language, or President Roosevelt who helped Britain during the early days of war with his Lease-Lend, Montgomery in North Africa, Eisenhower in Europe or General Slim in Burma? Best forgotten are the three nasties, Hitler, Goebbels and Goering, plus a few other unsavoury individuals. Hitherto almost unknown but now stamped indelibly in our memories are places like Dunkirk, El Alamein, Anzio, Arromanches and Arnhem. Remember the collapse of France with the Germans only 21 miles away across the English Channel, the Desert Rats in North Africa, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the valour of Malta, the terrible plight of our men on the Burma Road, the landings in Sicily, D-Day and the eventual crossing of the Rhine? At home there was the "Dig For Victory" campaign, the Battle of Britain, the London Blitz and the air raids on Coventry and other great cities, the "Doodle-Bug", the V-2 rockets, then finally, the joy of V-E Day. But amongst all this turmoil of war, there was a voice that helped to keep us going, a voice of comfort, of solace and of hope, a voice that brought parted loved ones together again for a few fleeting moments. It belonged to a young lady from London's East Ham, Vera Lynn.
