In his latest work, the renowned American composer and pianist Uri Caine breaks with traditional forms to create a fascinating sonic universe. Titled "The 7 Generation Principle," the piece combines mathematical precision, stylistic diversity, and the seamless fusion of composition and improvisation into a compelling, immersive experience. The work's structure follows a strict, almost ritualistic logic: Uri Caine has composed exactly 49 pieces (7 x 7). Each of these musical miniatures lasts approximately 77 seconds. The individual fragments transition seamlessly into one another, carrying forward the ideas of the preceding section and thus creating a continuous, hypnotic flow. The result is a multifaceted work that impresses with its stylistic range and captivates the audience from the first second to the last--a work possessing an urgency that compels the listener to hear it again immediately. This extraordinary project features top-tier soloists from the contemporary music scene as well as a first-rate vocal ensemble. The dense sounds of the instrumental ensemble are complemented and expanded by the multi-layered textures of eight voices from the EXAUDI Vocal Ensemble. Musical Structure Meets Indigenous Philosophy. The work engages with the 7-Generation Principle -- a concept dating back over 500 years -- of the confederacy of North American Indigenous peoples. This philosophy holds that, in all our deliberations, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations, while simultaneously acknowledging the legacy of the preceding seven. Uri Caine examines this guiding principle from the perspective of our lives and times today. It is a musical call to make decisions that not only serve the present but also ensure a healthy planet and sustainable relationships for the future.
