Following the success of 2019's Live in Poland, the Darius Brubeck Quartet (DBQ), featuring Dave O'Higgins on saxophone, Matt Ridley on double bass and Wesley Gibbens on drums, alongside Darius Brubeck on piano, release their new album Live Again.
Recorded during performances in Italy in 2025, with additional material recorded at the Menuhin Hall in 2026, the album captures a quartet that has played together for 20 years and the musical understanding and spontaneity developed through that long association.
Extensive touring in the UK and internationally has been central to the development of the group, and rather than recreating the quartet in a studio environment, Live Again captures the musicians in performance, where their interaction with one another, and with an audience, is an integral part of the music.
The repertoire brings together new compositions by Darius Brubeck with music reflecting different periods and influences in his life. 'Playing the Changes' was written for the documentary Playing the Changes: Tracking Darius Brubeck, whose title derives from the book written by Brubeck and his wife, Catherine. 'Autumn Elegy' was composed shortly before the quartet travelled to Palermo, while 'Brexit Blues' began life as 'At Sixes and Sevens' during the political upheaval surrounding Brexit. 'Prelude & Funque' brings together Bach's Prelude No. 20 in A minor and Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition', while 'Somebody in Seoul' reflects Brubeck's interest in the international rise of Korean popular culture, setting an Arirang-inspired melody against the changes of a familiar jazz standard. Brubeck's long relationship with South Africa is represented by 'Transkei', a piano and drums duet with South African-born Gibbens. The composition was previously recorded with the late South African drummer Lulu Gontsana for Darius's 2003 album Still On My Mind.
