This collection shines an overdue light on one of the best and most prolifically recorded jazz tenor saxophonists, Eddie Miller (1911-1991). He was most famous for his seminal contributions to the Bob Crosby Orchestra and Bob Cats - a shining zenith of the music in that genre. 14 tracks skim the cream, including his best-known composition, Slow Mood, and his celebrated clarinet solo on South Rampart Street Parade. But our survey provides a unique overall musical portrait that encapsulates Miller's glorious heyday in 50 tracks from his early brief solos in 1933 with Ben Pollack (Two Tickets To Georgia), through his exciting playing with Wingy Manone (Isle Of Capri.), Louis Prima (Swing Me With Rhythm), Glenn Miller (Solo Hop), Mound City Blue Blowers (High Society) and, especially, Bunny Berigan (Blues). These lead on to 10 fine tracks under Eddie's own leadership during the 40s, including a beautiful trio recording of Stars Fell On Alabama. Finally, 14 tracks from the 50s, mostly led by clarinettist Matty Matlock, and including such stars as Dick Cathcart and Abe Lincoln, are some of the finest and most artistically refined "Dixieland" jazz ever recorded.
