Description
This CD consists of two rare "Jubilee" broadcasts from 1943, recorded in Hollywood exclusively to be played by the Armed Forces Radio Service for U.S. troops overseas during WWII. The two headliners of these programmes are LOUIS ARMSTRONG with the LUIS RUSSELL ORCHESTRA and the BENNY CARTER ORCHESTRA, but also include young vocal stars LENA HORNE and HERB JEFFRIES, plus the gospel group THE CHARIOTEERS and a comedy act. The variety of music on this CD's 19 tracks give a very good view of popular musical tastes in the U.S. in the early 40's. Jubilee Sow #19 is one of the absolute best of the hundreds of shows which were made during WWII and includes two tunes - "One O'Clock Jump" and "Coquette" - which Armstrong rarely recorded. Benny Carter's Orchestra features the cream of L.A. musicians, including GERALD WILSON, J.J. JOHNSON, EDDIE DAVIS and SNOOKY YOUNG.
