Description
Pianist Joe Bonner (1948 - 2014) first came to Copenhagen, Denmark as a member of Billy Harper Group in early '80s and then made frequent trips to Denmark since. This solo recording from February 1983 was one of the very first digital recordings SteepleChase made. Bonner with his distinctive personal style is probably best presented in solo settings.
Bonner was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina where Thelonious Monk was born about three decades earlier and left strong influence on the young pianist. He performed in and around Denver, Colorado towards the end of his life and became a legendary figure.
"One cannot but admire the fluency and precision, the dexterous right hand...the diversity in his play is a mark of a great pianist." - Jean-Paul Ricard, Diapason
"An impressive modernist...The solo record is rather intense and inwardlooking." - The Penguin Guide to Jazz
"A solid player who can swing impressively." - Mike Hennessey, Jazz Journal International
