  • Description

This special CD release presents the complete 1962 Savoy album Archie Shepp - Bill Dixon Quartet, plus bonus tracks from a long unavailable sextet studio session by Shepp with the New York Contemporary Five , and a septet session by Bill Dixon.

For approximately 18 months (from the fall of 1961 to June 1963), Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon co-led a group that varied in size between a quartet, quintet and sextet, depending on the gig. They mostly played coffee houses and small theatres in Greenwich Village, and travelled to Scandinavia in July 1962 for a series of concerts at the first International Youth Festival in Helsinki.

Back in the United States, they featured in a series of radio performances on New York's WBAI. However, unless any unknown radio broadcast or live European performances surface, their only recorded work together consist of the studio quartet album made for

Savoy in October 1962, presented here on this special CD edition.

Archie Shepp's only other recording session for the Savoy label, including Don Cherry on one track, and Bill Dixon's second recording session, in a septet format, have been added as a bonus.

14 TRACKS. TOTAL TIME: 73:43. INCLUDES 12-PAGE BOOKLET

ARCHIE SHEPP, tenor sax; BILL DIXON, trumpet; DON MOORE, bass; REGGIE WORKMAN,bass; PAUL COHEN, drums; HOWARD McRAE ,drums. New York, October 1962.

    Description

180g virgin vinyl limited edition - the complete album + 2 bonus tracks.

During the period of 1961-1963, saxophonist Archie Shepp and trumpeter Bill Dixon co-led a group that varied in size between a quartet, quintet, and sextet, depending on the gig. However, their only recorded works together consist of the studio quartet album made for Savoy in October 1962, and presented here in its entirety. Both musicians belonged to the avant-garde of free jazz and their celebrity had yet to arrive during the time they worked together.

"After hearing this set, there can be no doubt that the new freedom in jazz is beginning to find direction. Shepp's solos, based on jazz roots, are fascinating, full of wit and convincing. He keeps a listener with him, and he never lets him down. And it simply has not been heard any place before. Listening to Shepp play is experiencing the essence of the 'new thing' and it is very exciting." - **** ½ Bill Mathieu, DownBeat
