  • Description

Ray Brown is undoubtedly one of jazz's most significant bassists! In 2026, Ray will be honored by many around the world, including Swedish bassist Hans Backenroth. In the late 1940s, Brown was the bassist in Dizzy Gillespie's big band, and it was the band's rhythm section--featuring Ray on bass, Milt Jackson on vibraphone, John Lewis on piano, and Kenny Clarke on drums--that formed the foundation of the Modern Jazz Quartet. After a few years, Brown left the quartet to form his own trio, which accompanied his then-wife, Ella Fitzgerald. He also began collaborating with pianist Oscar Peterson. In the mid-1960s, Brown moved to Los Angeles, where he made a living as a studio musician and served as manager for Quincy Jones--and the Modern Jazz Quartet.
