While their debut album 'Chicken ain't Chicken' was an excellent modern country album that looked backwards for its inspiration, there are few people who could have anticipated just how good the Sweetback's next was going to be. Regardless of how you categorise this disc, vintage Western swing, honky tonk or even classic Nashville country, what you have is a spectacular band presenting great songs with real style.

Emily & Zara (not real sisters) front the band and their distinctive vocals and precise harmonies give the band their unique sound, but behind them is a razor sharp band presenting effortlessly precise arrangements. Guitarist Ross Bellenoit is an exceptional player, moving from gentle rhythm through to rip-roaring guitar solos, he has a real feel for the genre and you can feel the fun he's having coming through in every note. Add to this upright bass, fiddle and percussion and you have a band that can effortlessly and convincingly turn their hand to any style from classic American music.

The whole album is full of highlights that cover a full range of styles, the opener 'Love Me, Honey, Do' is a Patsy Cline song that evokes the late 1950s in every way and puts down a marker for what can be expected for the remainder of the disc. The album closes with an ensemble vocal piece that must be quite a thing to see live; the title track touches on the rockier side of their output with some pretty direct lyrics. Elsewhere the band mix covers and originals from classic country songs through to the Travelling Wilbury's, there's certainly plenty of variety on offer here!

On 'Looking for a Fight' the Sweetback Sisters take the current vogue for classic and vintage sounds, and bring it alive with a modern sensibility. Listening to the songs, the arrangements, the playing and the production the listener is left in no doubt that the band have made the album they wanted to, and they've had fun getting there – one of the best discs of this (or any other) year.
