Description
'Shine' is a trio comprising 3 of Scotland's best known voices and 2 of the world's finest harp players who come together to create a distinctive harmonic, minimalist, melodic sound. Steeped in the traditions of Scotland (Alyth McCormack from the Hebrides, Corrina Hewat from the Highlands and Mary Macmaster from the Lowlands) all are known for their fresh approach to their individual traditions, while retaining respect for and ensuring the continuity of those traditions with their own work, melding classical, jazz, world and folk elements.
Corrina is in demand as a player, composer, musical director and teacher at the Royal Conservatoire. Alyth studied classical singing and drama at the Conservatoire of Scotland and now tours worldwide with The Chieftains. Mary was one of the first people in Scotland helping to revive the ancient wire strung clarsach. She is self-taught and considered one of its most pioneering players.
Individually they have toured with many amazing musicians: Sting, The Chieftains, Trace Adkins, Ry Cooder, Carol Kidd, Eric Bibb, Kathryn Tickell, The Unusual Suspects, The Poozies and Sileas, adding details from these musical collaborations to their Gaelic songs, contemporary covers and now original material to create the sound that has become integral to the bewitching otherworldliness of Shine.
Expect the unexpected with this band, as they take you on a journey, shining their peculiar harmonic light into the darkest corners to reveal human nature the world over and the stories it has to tell.
In their previous existence, before their 10-Year hiatus, although Shine toured around Europe and always planned to perform in North America, a suitable chance never presented itself.
A fortunate series of collaborative projects brought the girls back together and they are now reformed, more excited than ever, and eager to be playing again.
Their highly acclaimed debut album Sugarcane will be re-released in April and they are already working on a new recording to be completed by the end of 2014.
