Description
Modus Operandi brings together acclaimed Sicilian pianist Salvatore Bonafede with legendary bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Billy Hart in a remarkable piano trio recording built upon spontaneity, interaction, and the art of the first take.
Recorded following a successful Italian tour, the album captures three master improvisers creating music without reliance on post-production, allowing the honesty of performance and the chemistry between the musicians to shape every piece. The result is a deeply expressive modern jazz recording that balances lyrical melodies with adventurous harmonic exploration.
Bonafede's compositions and interpretations draw inspiration from literature, visual art, and jazz history, weaving references to John Fante, James Joyce, Salvador Dali, Jelly Roll Morton, and Thelonious Monk into a unified musical narrative. Original works sit comfortably alongside imaginative reinterpretations of standards, while the trio's intuitive communication transforms each performance into an evolving conversation filled with subtle interplay, rhythmic freedom, and melodic invention.
Salvatore Bonafede was born on August 4, 1962, in Palermo, Italy and began playing the piano at the age of four. Initially self-taught, he later received classical tuition and in 1973 entered the Conservatory of Music in Palermo. As a teenager he started gigging with local groups and big bands, accompanied several visiting American stars, worked in the orchestra for a few theatrical performances as well as appearing on national Radio and Television programs. His discography includes some fifteen or more albums as leader and throughout the 1990s and 2000s, has recorded extensively with acclaimed musicians such as Marc Johnson, Paul Motian, Paolo Fresu, Randy Brecker, John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Tim Berne, Ralph Towner, Dave Douglas, Michael Formanek, and Enrico Rava.
