Description
CLEVINGER are a four-piece punk rock band from Detroit, Michigan. The members of CLEVINGER are working professionals in what they deem in song, as "Dying Industries"; Union Lawyer, Engineer, Investigative Journalist, and High School Teacher. Being long standing members of Detroit's tight knit, and inspiring punk-rock community, CLEVINGER represent what Midwestern punk rock is all about; songs about heartache, hope, growing old, loss, love, and struggle. The songs that make up their first full-length for Salinas Records, Personal / Professional, explore these themes, but not in a way that has become all too redundant in years past. Personal / Professional breathes new life to a genre that so desperately needs it. Opening track "Dark Thoughts" sets the mood for our journey through a frozen Detroit cityscape, and the tracks that follow take us further into a city where struggle and hope exist harmoniously.
The raw production on Personal / Professional acts as the band's silent fifth member. Recorded in early summer of 2016, by Matthew Cross of Orange 9mm at Rise Like Lions studio in the notorious Cass Corridor neighborhood of Detroit, it gives the listener the feeling that they are in the same room with the band. This feeling, in turn makes the transfer of energy from recording to listener immediate. The listener becomes immersed in CLEVINGER's world, where personal politics and institutional politics become one.
The heart-on-your-sleeve punk rock well that CLEVINGER have been inspired by over the years is prevalent on Personal / Professional. Songs like "Someday" and "Desperate With Age" laid their hearts bear, and open for all to see. CLEVINGER invites you in to their world, but also asks you to become apart of it on Personal / Professional. Personal / Professional may not be breaking new ground in the genre of punk, but at least it is giving it a fresh voice and a new life.
