Description
All the choral highlights from the 21st London Welsh Festivals of Male Choirs live from the Albert Hall, London.
Concerts don't just happen. Planning this Festival, the 21st, began over two and a half years ago. The fifteen choirs making up the 2008 Festival Choir were sent the music, and started the hard work. The non-Welsh choirs had to contend with a programme containing one third of the repertoire in the Welsh language, whilst our friends from Slovenia also had to learn the remaining two thirds in English. That one exception was an item in Italian, which everyone had to wrestle with.
This double CD contains all of the choral items from the actual concert, such was the quality of the singing. The icing on this musical cake was the presence of two fine soloists, the rising operatic soprano Gwawr Edwards, and internationally renowned tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones.
Fresh from winning the European championship, the Cory Band made a welcome debut, Annabel Thwaite was on the piano for the first time, whilst Jeffrey Howard achieved a long-held ambition to play a solo item and accompany the choirs on the mighty Albert Hall organ.
Many of the audience present felt that this was the best ever Festival; all I know is that, in making my ninth appearance as conductor, it was a privilege to be part of a truly wonderful evening with some superb singing and playing.
