Description
Day is the second album by drummer Rudy Royston's chamber-like ensemble Flatbed Buggy, featuring John Ellis on woodwinds, Gary Versace on accordion, Hank Roberts on cello, and Joe Martin on bass.
A concept album, Day is an illustration of the typical ups and downs, joys and sadness, gratitude and dreads a typical day would bring, ultimately culminating in a celebration of life and healing.
Each track on Day has a time associated with it, like how "Morning" and "Thank You For This Day" give tribute to that gratitude for seeing another day, for health, for strength and for life. The all-original album features eight new Royston compositions, plus Hank Roberts' "Limeni Village" and Joe Martin's "A.M. Hours".
Royston is a world-class session musician, known for his studio work and touring with many jazz stars including Bill Frisell, JD Allen, and Dave Douglas. With the release of Day, Royston's fourth album overall on Douglas' label Greenleaf Music, his presence as a composer-bandleader becomes just as distinctive and undeniable.
