Description
The second volume of Roman Rabinovich's complete cycle of Haydn Piano Sonatas, with each volume featuring Rabinovich's iPad drawings.
The pianist has earned critical praise for his explorations of the piano music of Haydn, which include his 42 sonata cycle at the 2018 Bath International Festival. Haydn was a prominent and prolific Austrian composer of the Classical period and composed 62 keyboard sonatas. Written over a 40 year period or so, and displaying a variety of styles, the earlier sonatas were
written for harpsichord and the last for the newly developed hammer-action fortepiano.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM
"The elegance and liveliness of Rabinovich's keyboard style are, indeed, a joy to listen to, and his unfailing musicality and inventivemenss allows him to penetrate to the expressive heart of Haydn's world." – 5 STARS / 5 STARS, BBC Music Magazine
"Haydn's characteristic wit and charm are omnipresent" (ALBUM OF THE MONTH – International Piano Magazine)
"…once again responding with personality and imagination to Haydn's seemingly limitless invention… It's quite a journey through Haydn's piano sonatas, and as his cycle unfolds, it seems as if Rabinovich is going to be as individual a guide as the likes of Bavouzet and Hamelin in their recent surveys and selections" (Gramophone)
"I rate Rabinovich extremely highly in Haydn and this new set confirms and expands that view… Volume Two is, if anything, even better [than vol. 1] and it will most definitely be amongst my Recordings of the Year." (RECORDING OF THE MONTH – MusicWeb International)
Rabinovich's first volume of Haydn Piano Sonatas [FHR071] has received incredible cirtical acclaim:
"….this first volume in what will be a complete set of the Haydn piano sonatas oeuvre is both fascinating and hugely impressive…. This 'complete' Haydn may oust Rudolf Buchbinder's magisterial set as the benchmark recording" (performance ***** / recording ***** BBC Music Magazine)
"Rabinovich is up there with Bavouzet in this repertoire… Delightful." (••••• International Piano Magazine)
"The first two discs are a foretaste of splendours to come, with his singing cantabile in the adagio to the C major Sonata No 36 and beguiling virtuosity in Haydn's brilliantly entertaining presto and prestissimo finales" (Hugh Canning, The Sunday Times)
"Rabinovich responds to this ever-inventive music with a broad palette of tone and touch, sweetly singing in the cantabile slow movements and with fluent dexterity in the fingery fast movements….the development of the cycle as it unfolds will, without doubt, be well worth further listening" (Gramophone)
