Description
On this new release Richard Stotzman, one of the outstanding clarinet soloists of his generation, performs music by two composers who’s music are eclectic and often inspired by the traditions of jazz, William Bolcom and Clare Fischer. Featured works include Bolcom’s Clarinet Concerto and Fischer’s piece “The Duke, Swee’Pea and Me.
Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom's music embodies true theatrical flair, orchestral prowess, tunefulness and virtuosity. His knowledge and love of American culture's vast eclecticism, from its earthy roots to a love of classical and modern styles make him one of America’s most important compositional voices. Add to this his Grammy Award-winning Songs of Innocence and of Experience, and his three operas, and you have a composer who understands how to write truly great vocal music. These many vocal elements are evident in his Clarinet Concerto. The beauty of the second movement is especially worth noting, for it is a timeless and enduring piece of music. Commedia, one of Bolcom’s most popular works, has received more than 1000 performances.
The Duke, Swee' pea, and Me was created for Richard Stoltzman by the great composer and arranger Clare Fischer, who asked Clare to take some of his favourite tunes of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, nicknamed “Swee' pea and turn them into a symphonic tone poem for the clarinet.
This is one of the first four new releases on the Canadian label Marquis since Proper Note took over its distribution this month.
