Description
Firmly establishing herself as one of the UK's most revered up and coming soul artists, Mica Millar's fourteen-track debut 'Heaven Knows' explores themes of human nature, hope, spirituality, love, oppression, inequality and empowerment.
Self-written and self-produced, 'Heaven Knows' is an uninterrupted journey through heartfelt and honest emotions, masterfully drawing inspiration from the ages of gospel, soul, jazz, blues and R&B and firmly rooting itself as a timeless soul record that is both reassuringly familiar yet distinctively Mica Millar.
Opening with 'Girl' - thought-provoking, relatable and uplifting in equal measure and the stomping spiritual 'Preacher Man,' which encourages encounters with faith. There's groove aplenty in 'More Than You Give Me' whilst title track 'Heaven Knows' bursts with confidence, showcasing a powerful vocal performance atop a bed of gospel infused musicianship.
'Flashlights' is a smooth and sultry soundscape with a stunningly subtle vocal performance upon lush strings whilst 'Trouble' is packed with attitude exploring fate and resilience. 'Fool's Fate' lays back on grooving guitar hooks and blues ballad 'Will I See You Again' calls a lover home.
"No Money, Nor Faith (Freedom)"draws inspiration from the deep south reminiscent, protesting the darkness of capitalism and "Stay"a heart-aching ballad, overlaid with wavy synth soundscapes is followed by the jazz-infused 'Down River'.
"My Lover" tugs on the heart strings and 'Nothing's For Keeps' showcases an emotional vocal performance above a pulsing beat before blues-rock 'Give View My Prayer' closes proceedings hinting at a more experimental edge to Mica's song writing and production.
