Description
2026 marks the centenary of the quintessential sultry songstress, Jeri Southern, who sings and plays her way through a warmly intimate sequence comprising the 52 best of her 1949-1959 heyday. Nebraskan-born Genevieve Hering (1926-1991) rose to fame as "Jeri Southern". In the 50s the velvety, smokey-voiced, jazz influenced singer-pianist was sultriness personified. Her highly individual style ranged easily through 'torch', 'cool', standards and pop. Her wistful When I Fall In Love, perhaps the best-loved of all her recordings, provides the title and sets the tone for Retrospective's Jeri Southern showcase: intimate ballads delivered with an intoxicating mix of vocal warmth and cool intellectualism that include such evergreens as I Thought About You Last Night, Ev'rytime We Say Goodbye and The Very Thought Of You. On a series of highly regarded albums, Jeri also worked with some of the very best jazz arrangers: Ralph Burns (No Moon At All), Marty Paich (Crazy He Calls Me) and Billy May (Looking At You), from which we have skimmed the cream.
