Description
The Avril Quartet was formed in 2024 by four young Belgian and Swiss musicians, mainly active in Belgium in various orchestras and chamber music ensembles. Their main ambition is to promote music written by female composers. Their first album brings together works by four female composers with very different aesthetics, how-ever all driven in their work by the search for pure emotion through music. On the initiative of cellist Alexandre Bughin, the Quartet appears on stage together with author and actor Philippe Cloes, who wrote the texts for this booklet, in a perfor-mance that connects the music and life journeys of seven women composers. In 2023, the association Elles Women Composers revealed that during the latest season at the Philharmonie de Paris, only 6% of the works performed were written by women. Unfortunately, these stark figures can still be applied to the vast majority of concert halls. Yet for those who take the time to explore the work of female composers who are still too often overlooked, such beautiful pages of music are revealed, prompting legitimate questions as to the reasons for their near-systematic absence from concert programming.
