  • Description

Legendary brilliant composer/vocalist/guitarist Joao Bosco is one of the main figures of the MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) scene. His 2006 release Obrigada Gente! Ao Vivo (Universal Brazil) has sold over 100,000 copies in his homeland Brasil. In Europe he is still one of the "secret pearls" of Brazilian singer-songwriter music to be discovered by a larger audience. Admired as a versatile vocalist and a dynamic performer Joao Bosco has been noted for his singular fusion of Arab culture, Afro-American music and Brazilian style bossa nova influenced by American jazz.

Joao Bosco first worked with the NDR Bigband during a tour in Brazil in the spring of 2007. After that, they went to the studio in Hamburg to record Senhoras do Amazonas (Yellowbird), an album with arrangements by the great Steve Gray, who sadly passed away before its release in 2010.

Now, shortly before Joao's 80th birthday, they are reunited with this album. On the title song, you hear repetitive, stomping rhythms, interrupted by threatening shouts. An increasing wildness begins, which finally dissolves into a peaceful mood. Horda refers to a complex and ambivalent entity that offers protection and in which community is constantly being renegotiated. However, a dangerous group dynamic can also develop within a horde, taking on authoritarian traits. This is of global significance, especially in today's world, where diplomacy and dialogue are being swept away.

"The album is also a tribute to the greats who gave the world special grooves," emphasises Joao Bosco, "to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Joao Gilberto, and Tom Jobim." Above all, music is a sensual experience that leaves room for interpretation, a space where words become sounds and sounds find their words. This is particularly impressive to hear in Sinha, a song by Chico Buarque and Joao Bosco of timeless beauty and depth. All these ingredients create that fusion, the "Afro-Brazilian Jazz sound".
