Description
Country music was shaped in the Atlanta area in the early 1920s by skilled solo fiddlersand various string bands - The style would quite soon rise in popularity with assistance of radio shows like Grand Ole Opry and the pioneering artists Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family. During the 1930s and 1940s several country performers got other musicalinspiration anddeveloped more swingin' brands like western-swing, honky-tonk andhillbilly-boogie.Meanwhile the Afro-American musicians, with their musical traditions of blues and jazz, did progress into rhythm and blues with its ground-breaking beat. Further progressivemusical exchanges would also take place over the next years. And so... in the mid-1950s the new musical cocktail rockabilly (basically mixing countrywith rhythm and blues) was ready to take the world by storm. Sun Records inMemphis,Tennessee released the genres pioneering artists: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins,Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. These guys (a.k.a. The Million Dollar Quartet) hadenormous success both as live performers and recording artists. The purpose of this compilation is not only to show the logical connection betweencountry music and rockabilly, but also to other musical exchanges of importance.
