Description
'The Day of Reckoning' is the debut album from the exciting bassist/composer Gavin Barras' band that was composed during last summer's riots. The album features eight original compositions and his quintet includes Ed Jones on tenor saxophone and Steve Plews on piano. Gavin is probably best know for being a member of Matthew Halsall's band and has also performed with Tim Garland, Dave O'Higgins, Zoe Rahman, Mike Walker and others.
Gavin explains the inspiration behind the album: "On 8 August 2011 I was due to play at Matt and Phred's Jazz Club; the gig was cancelled on the advice of Greater Manchester Police and I spent the rest of the night watching footage of parts of the city burning whilst listening to my favourite records and composing all of the tunes that appear on this album. The tune 'The Day of Reckoning' depicts that day, the sense of foreboding , the sinister gangs on street corners, the violence and looting - and the sudden end."
Personnel: Gavin Barras (double bass), Ed Jones (tenor saxophone), Steve Plews (piano), Corey Mwamba (vibraphone), Dave Walsh (drums)
