'Blues Etude' was a transitional album in Oscar Peterson's career. In the middle of making it, Ray Brown, who had been playing with him for 15 years, left the group. He would be replaced by Sam Jones, while drummer Ed Thigpen would be replaced by Louis Hayes. The previous trio, with both Brown and Thigpen, is heard on the second LP presented here, 'Canadiana Suite', a heartfelt homage to Peterson's home country. Besides the contagious swing of all of the trio's formations, one of the highlights of both albums is the pianist's work as a composer. He composed three of the tunes on 'Blues Etude' and all of the tunes on 'Canadiana Suite'.
"The personnel changed but the basic sound of the Oscar Peterson Trio remained unchanged (Peterson was the dominant voice anyway) and the personality of the group remained intact." **** AllMusic, Scott Yanow
"Peterson's tribute to his native Canada includes several noteworthy pieces. Peterson swings hard but often with sensitivity throughout the enjoyable set." **** AllMusic, Scott Yanow
